The name “Woodlands” is pure nostalgia to me, taking me back to the several summers in Bangalore (Bengaluru, if we must), where an annual trip to the iconic restaurant to savour the flavours of Karnataka had to be done.

While they’re totally disconnected, I recently visited the Woodlands in Marylebone last week. With the fond memories of Bangalore in mind, I was initially apprehensive but, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised.
Woodlands is one of the few pure vegetarian restaurants in Central London where you aren’t restricted to raw foods or typical vegan fare (although they do have vegan and gluten free menus). In fact, a world apart, Woodlands’ new menu is a tour of authentic North and South Indian food at great value in a relaxed yet upmarket setting. From peppy dishes like the Africa-inspired Chilli Mogo (Cassava) to Chaat Bombs and a selection of unique Dosa combinations, Woodlands caters to one and all.

I loved the Chaas, an Indian savoury yoghurt drink with coriander, ginger, cumin and chilli. Perfectly spiced, it’s light and refreshing – the ideal accompaniment to a wholesome Indian meal. The Channa Bhatura (a spicy chickpea curry served with fluffy bread) is unmissable. My favourite, however, has to be their signature Masala Dosa (savoury crepes stuffed with spiced mashed potato, pictured above), served with the very Bangalorean Gunpowder (yes, it’s edible) to complete the Woodlands experience. Crisp, paper thin and totally delicious – a complete must do!
