Is Mediterranean / North African food just about Hummus, Falafel and Greek Salad? It’s a grumble I have had for a while, because it feels like the cuisine has been totally misrepresented – a bit like tandoori restaurants rendering Indian food down to Balti, Korma and Vindaloo. I have been on the hunt for something new for a while.

Then last week, I discovered The Barbary. Finally, a restaurant in London that extends beyond the typical. The concept is a really cute, classy bar surrounding an open kitchen, great for couples or small groups. The menu is short and sweet, with innovative items like the Jerusalem Bagel and Ikra. The best thing about the restaurant is that it features a proper tandoor inside and everything is made freshly in front of you, for you.
I absolutely loved their Naan e Barbari (freshly baked bread from the tandoor), Zhug (a coriander and chilli chutney) & Harissa platter, and the Beetroot & Labneh (a thick yoghurt dip). Every one of these was bursting with its own unique flavour… and the great thing is there is still so much more to try.
Definitely my next pick anytime anyone suggests North African cuisine!
